Two 20th Century Dates that Changed the Course of History Forever
Orchestra 2001
Sep 01, 1939 – Hitler Invades Poland, and July 20, 1969 The First Moon Landing
Orchestra 2001’s program selects two contrasting dates in 20th-Century history that ushered in the beginning of very different new eras in world history, highlighting both the worst and the best in mankind.
September 1, 1939: Hitler Invades Poland – A Period of Human Depravity, Tragedy, and Mourning Orchestra 2001 and soprano Tamara Matthews will perform Henryk Górecki’s Symphony No. 3, “Symphony of Sorrowful Songs” which includes text that was scrawled by a young girl on the wall of a Gestapo prison in southern Poland, and a plaintive Polish folk song in which a mother grieves for a son lost in war. A 1992 recording of this piece sold more than a million copies (unprecedented for classical music recordings), and made the “Top 10” on the Music Week pop chart. Orchestra 2001 presented the Philadelphia premiere of the work in 1996.
July 20, 1969: The First Moon Landing – Celebrating the Human Spirit and Genius Orchestra 2001 and soprano Ann Crumb will perform George Crumb’s “Night of the Four Moons,” with text by Federico García Lorca. This piece was written during the Apollo 11 moon landing, an event that represented great optimism for the American people following a 1960s decade of tragedies and assassinations.
This PIFA program highlights the diversity and flexibility typical of Orchestra 2011 – at times an Orchestra 2001 concert may feature a single performer or very small ensemble; at other times it can be expanded to fill the stage with a large chamber orchestra.
