Hiraki: Tsunami Loss & Hope
Settlement Music School / Friends of the Japanese House and Garden / KyoDaiko
Mar 11, 2011 – Earthquake and Tsunami devastate Japan
On March 11, 2011, a 9.0 magnitude earthquake triggered a tsunami and nuclear disaster, which devastated the northern Tohoku region of Japan. Among the many cities impacted was Sendai. For over 25 years, Sendai has been a cultural partner to Philadelphia's Shofuso Japanese House and Gardens, and relationships forged between artists in the two cities have brought the culture of Sendai to Philadelphia. For PIFA 2013, Settlement Music School, The Friends of the Japanese House and Garden, and KyoDaiko Taiko Drummers have come together to present Hiraki: Tsunami Loss and Hope, a specially commissioned work by Kaoru Watanabe that memorializes the victims of the 2001 catastrophe and the resilience of its survivors.
KyoDaiko Taiko Drummers of Philadelphia will perform two versions of this stunning program:
April 13 at Settlement Music School
7:00 PM - Hiraki and other Taiko Drumming selections by KyoDaiko
Free for Children Ages 12 and under
April 18 at Shofuso Japanese House and Garden
