Nov 08, 1682 – William Penn arrives & establishes Pennsylvania

For a weekend in April, the library at the Historical Society of Pennsylvania will be transformed through the imagination of performance artist Sebastienne Mundheim. Mundheim and her team will travel through time, using puppetry, dance, storytelling, and the archives of the Historical Society of Pennsylvania for inspiration. What better way to celebrate time travel than through the magic of an archive...a paper time machine.

Seated in the Society's beautiful, historic Reading Room, the audience will encounter sleeping giants, stomping faceless warriors in weighted costumes made of books, and silent planters who insist that history is best kept by the ringing of the trees. These history keepers whisper back and forth to ask why do we begin our memory-making with William Penn? And through their questions we discover our own, and reflect on how we chose to see ourselves in the context of the past.

Performers include: Bethany Formica, Lee Ann Etzold, Elizabeth Weinstein, Katie Croyle, Arielle Pina, Kianna Moye, and Nathan Logue. Sound design and composition: Alban Bailley. Written, designed, and directed by Sebastienne Mundheim. Performance duration 40 minutes. Appropriate for audiences of all ages.

Since 1824, the Historical Society of Pennsylvania has been dedicated to collecting, preserving, and sharing the stories of Pennsylvania and the nation. There are more than 21 million items in the Society’s world-renowned research library, including many national treasures. The Historical Society of Pennsylvania is a leading repository of ethnic and immigrant history, as well as a rich repository of genealogical material.
